What’s a song that changed your life?
Once a year on antenna TV The Wizard of Oz would play. This was a family event for us kids to watch it with mom and dad. We would get popcorn and snuggle all in with all 7 of us total.
I love that movie. Since I got to see it for the first time, I felt like I could relate to Dorothy. Especially when she sang Over the Rainbow. I would imagine in my head that there was a whole different world out there and it gave me hope.
Watching that movie as a family was not a normal thing. Normal was loud, angry, yelling, punching and every day was driven by fear.
One year my dad recorded The Wizard of Oz from the TV onto VHS. I watched that movie all day long. It took me out of my present terror and into a beautiful place. When Dorothy would sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow, I’d give it my all and sang with her.
That song gave me hope in an isolated world of doubt and hopelessness. I knew or believed that somewhere out there was a better way of life.
